Holiday Cottages in the Lake District

It’s hard to do the Lake District justice, using nothing more than words. Seeing lush green hills roll out into the distance, miles further than the eye can see. Watching the sun bounce playfully across crystal water, as the smell of dewdrops fills the air. Listening, as all around, an array of wonderful wildlife, from red squirrels to golden eagles, grey seals to red deer, wake to another beautiful morning in Cumbria, and head about their day.

Sitting atop one of the area’s majestic fells feels like sitting atop creation. Are you ready to find your new favourite place in England? Then welcome to the Lake District. One of the brightest gems in the U.K.’s crown.

Internationally recognised beauty

Not only does the Lake District welcome nearly 16 million satisfied holidaymakers every year, making it one of the most visited destinations in Britain, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alongside the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, and the Great Barrier Reef, the Lake District has been officially catalogued by the United Nations as a ‘site of outstanding importance to the common heritage of humankind’.

Scenery that’s inspired our greatest writers

The Lake District’s spectacular scenery hasn’t just inspired some of the best staycations England has ever seen. It’s also given birth to some of this nation’s most incredible literature.

Beatrix Potter, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Arthur Ransome are a small sample of the many writers whose work draws from the areas of outstanding natural beauty. Ever wondered where exactly William Wordsworth ‘wandered lonely as a cloud’? It was across one of the Lake District’s stunning fells.

Wainwright’s walking routes

Perhaps the most ardent lover of the lakes was Alfred Wainwright. As a young man, A.W., as he liked to be called, fell in love with Cumbria. He found the area so stunning that after moving to Kendal, he dedicated his life to mapping it. Over the years, he produced a list of 214 ‘Wainwrights’ - the summits of what he saw as the Lake District’s true fells.

Thanks to A.W.’s incredible effort, these Wainwrights are internationally considered as one of the best collections of walking routes in the world. If you’re after a Snaptrip favourite, we recommend Helm Crag. Known locally as ‘The Lion and the Lamb’, it’s a short walk up from Grasmere with an absolutely staggering view out from the summit.

Magnificent mountains and the best walk in Britain

As you might expect, when we think of the Lake District, most of us picture bountiful bodies of water. But that’s far from everything this luxury location has to offer. Cumbria boasts the 10 tallest mountains in England (that’s right, all 10!), meaning it’s almost home to the best mountain walking routes in the country.

At 978 metres, Scafell Pike has the highest, and most famous, peak in England. With dozens of routes to the top, almost every walker can tick this magnificent mountain off their to-do list. Our top pick, however, is the walk up Helvellyn, England’s third-highest peak, and officially voted as ‘Britain’s best walk’. While relatively tricky, it serves up stunning sights of everything the lake district does best - water, wildlife, and wondrous hills.

Beautiful all year round

One of the best things about the Lake District is there isn’t a bad time to have your holidays here. It’s one of those destinations that’s stunning all year round, with every season serving up its own brand of special.

Winter is the perfect time to find someone special and book a luxury log cabin beside a frost-covered forest. Autumn attracts photographers, as the leaves begin to change and incredible new colours appear. In Spring, the Lake District national parks are abuzz with nature, while the long sunny days of Summer make the lakes ideal for watersports.

Book unique Lake District holidays

With so many incredible holidays on offer, it’s not hard to tailor your Cumbria getaway to precisely what you’re craving. From stunning rustic stone-built cottages to sleek modern cabins, whatever you’re after, we at Snaptrip will help you find the perfect place to stay.

Want your four-legged friend to join the fun? We’ll help you find the perfect pet-friendly cottage. Travelling with a special someone? Book a romantic cottage with a hot tub, or maybe cottage with an open fire. If you’re looking for a classy getaway, find a luxury cottage, an extra-large holiday home, or perhaps a property with a pool. Craving an incredible sea view? Peruse cottages on the coast, or by the beach.
