Wordsworth House in Cockermouth
Cockermouth is famously the birthplace and childhood home of the poet William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth in 1770 in the striking Georgian property situated in the heart of town centre on Main Street.
Cared for by the National Trust, both the house and garden are opened to visitors with live actors playing Wordsworths’ servants in period costume featuring as part of the visitor experience. Original Wordsworth items are on displays and family activities and craft sessions run regularly.
The Wordsworth Family at Wordsworth House
The Wordsworths were a large family of five children and they employed several servants, details of whom also feature in a tour of the house and garden in Cockermouth. William Wordsworth’s father John moved to Cockermouth in 1764 and William Wordsworth, the second oldest child, was born in the house in 1770 followed by Dorothy in 1771.
Georgian Family Home
The striking historic Georgian property was built in 1745 and is a superb living history museum for children featuring costumed characters which bring the story of Wordsworth’s childhood alive in a fun interactive way. Around Wordsworth House is an authentically planted 1770s garden appearing much as it would have been in Wordsworth’s day.
