The West and East Malling area between Maidstone and Sevenoaks is the perfect gateway into Mid and West Kent. Pretty West Malling is brimming with heritage buildings in and around the centre including Norman Keep St Leonard’s Tower on the outskirts of the town thought to have been constructed by the Bishop of Rochester, Gundulf, in 1080!
Other highlights include the central Malling Abbey, a Benedictine Abbey open to the public on heritage open days. Great Comp Garden at Platt with its 7 acres of gardens, gift shop, tearooms and country manor house is also not to be missed, situated just a 10 minute drive from West Malling.
West Mailling’s excellent road and rail links are another reason why this area of Mid-Kent makes such a great touring base or travel stopover. The town sits just off the M20/ A20/ A228 and has a railway station with fast rail links to London Victoria, Maidstone, Ashford and elsewhere in Kent.
