Ullswater Outdoor Activities
Lake Ullswater is a hotspot for family friendly outdoor activity holidays in the Lake District. A fantastic choice of water sports are here, accessible from Ullswater outdoor activity centres, boatyards and sailing centres offering boat hire and a wide choice of courses for sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, kayaking and raft sailing on England’s most beautiful lake. Fishing on Ullswater is also incredibly popular both on and around the lake.
Fishing on Ullswater
Fishing on Ullswater, around both the accessible areas of the shoreline and on the lake, is incredibly popular as Ullswater is rich in brown trout as well as pike, perch, schelley and char. You need no permit to fish on Ullswater but visitors do need an environment agency rod licence available from Glenridding Tourist Information Centre.
Hire boats for fishing on the lake at Glenridding, Ullswater Marine at Watermillock and at Pooley Bridge. You can pick up fishing tackle in Glenridding and there are superb specialist angling shops in Penrith town centre. Nearby Haweswater Reservoir is also a fishing hotspot especially around the north west shore and for the adventurous angler some of the tarns of the Eastern Fells like Brotherswater and Grisedale Tarn are also rich in brown trout.
Watersports on Ullswater
Lake Ullswater is one of the Lake District’s most popular lakes for sailing, canoeing, kayaking and boat hire. Hire boats or take sailing lesson on Ullswater from a selection of sailing clubs, boathouses and watersports centres around the lake including Glenridding Sailing Centre.
Several lakeside centres offer small boat craft hire including St Patrick’s Boat Landings in Glenridding, Ullswater Marine at Watermillock and Lakeland Boat Hire at Pooley Bridge. Activity Centres around Ullswater
Top outdoor activity centres offering great adventure activities for groups, stag & hen weekends and family days out around Ullswater include Reach Beyond Adventure just north of Ullswater and Eden Outdoor Adventures based at Ousby near Penrith. Glenridding Sailing Centre is a top spot for boat hire and sailing tuition on Lake Ullswater and Distant Horizons Outdoor Activity Centre at Watermillock also offer a fantastic choide of kayak tours, raft sailing, canoeing and sunset paddles on Lake Ullswater.
A major centre for regattas and sailing events on Ullswater, the Ullswater Yacht Club sits along the eastern shoreline just south of Pooley Bridge. One of the UK wide Outward Bound Trust activity centres specialising in outdoor learning and activities for young people is also situated around Ullswater and Howtown.
Walking around Ullswater
Favourite Ullswater walks, often in conjunction with a scenic cruise on Ullswater Steamers, include the Howtown to Glenridding walk which pushes for around 7 miles from Howtown Pier to Glenridding Pier following the shoreline and features stunning daffodils in Spring.
Wordsworth’s famous poem ‘The Daffodils’ was inspired by such walks. It was around Ullswater that Wordsworth composed his famous line ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud..”. The Aira Force Waterfalls are the most famous falls in the Lakes and there are a choice of longer or short walks taking in the Waterfalls which sit on the western shoreline off the A5091 to the north east of Glenridding.
More challenging fell walking features around Howtown, with Glenridding always a favourite walking holiday base around Ullswater offering a choice of guided walks. Popular walks around Pooley Bridge include the more gentle walk to beautiful Dalemain House and Gardens.
