About the show
The Turriff Agricultural Show is organised each Summer by the Turriff District Agricultural Association. It is the largest Aberdeenshire annual event as well as being the largest two-day show in the whole of Scotland.
150 years old in 2014 (which coincides with Scotland’s Year of Homecoming) this is always a popular event. Taking place at The Showfield, Turriff there are many categories in which locals can win prizes – produce, preserves, cookery, wine, honey, knitting, crochet, sewing, wood craft, shepherd’s crooks, flower arrangement and walking sticks to name just a few. Prize money for the winners is quite small in each class – only a few pounds for each of these categories, but this does not discourage participation.
In addition to these ‘industrial’ prize entries, there are expected to be about 450 cattle, 800 horse and ponies, 40 goats, 580 sheep and 40 Clydesdale horses all competing in their individual classes. There are also fur and feather classes and an open dog show, rabbit and cavy sections, poultry show and companion dog show.
Other entertainment and stands abound, with around 250 stalls, a food and indoor shopping mall, and an exhibition hall, forestry area, funfair and educational area. Over 1,700 home craft exhibits will be on display, and a large horticultural show will be held.
The ringside entertainment is full of special attractions too – featuring the Jason Smyth Adrenaline Tour (ex-World Champion Moto-Cross rider Jason Smyth performs quad bike and motorcycle stunts), Terrier Racing with Cyril the Squirrel, and pony carriage driving.
Night times in the show field’s marquee include entertainment from a celidh band and a disco.
The Turriff District Agricultural Association won the Northern Lights Aberdeenshire Tourism Initiative Award in 2008 and has been awarded the Farmers Guardian Show Business Award for 2013.
This is an event for the active participation of residents of the North East of Scotland, but it is also of major interest to visitors to this area, many of whom will be travelling to and staying in the area especially for the Show.
All in all, the Turriff Show is a very varied, fun event for the whole family to enjoy.
