Things to Do in Douglas, Capital of the Isle of Man

Douglas has been the Isle of Man’s bustling capital since 1863, and is packed with fun holiday attractions. Home to the Isle of Man’s main finance centre and the busy working harbour, Douglas is the main point for ferry services to the Isle of Man. Perfect for families, a range of scenic transport options are available direct from the seaside capital including the steam railway connecting the capital to Castletown and Port Erin. Visitors can also pick up the scenic Electric Railway just north of the town at Derby Castle and travel on to Laxey and Ramsey.

Seaside Attractions in Douglas

Douglas has a beautiful two mile long beach bay flanked by a busy Victorian promenade and it’s your choice which two areas of the town you stay in. The South Side puts you right at the centre of attractions, with the steam railway, town centre shops, the sea terminal and bus links all just a short stroll away. The quieter North side is ideal for the Manx Electric Railway, offering a more peaceful base with easy access to the North of the Island.

Alongside great theatres, classic seaside attractions and easy access to the rest of the island, Douglas is also home of one of the few golf courses in the world designed by Dr Alexander (Allster) MacKenzie, renowned for designing some of the world’s most challenging golf courses. The 18 hole course includes an on-site restaurant, tuition and a clubhouse. Get orientated in Douglas and book onto the Mann Sightseeing Tour of Douglas departing from the Sea Terminal, taking in top attractions including the TT Grandstand, the Manx Museum and the Camera Obscura en-route.

Douglas Heritage Railways

Take your pick of scenic railway rides around Douglas. Pick up the heritage steam railway which pushes south towards Castletown or hop aboard the scenic electric railway just north of the town which runs up to Laxey and the great wheel, and Ramsey beyond.

Groundle Glen Railway

Other top railway journeys easily accessed from Douglas include the Groundie Glen Railway with on-site Sea Lion Rocks Tea rooms. A Manx charity and attraction all in one, this fabulous heritage railway journey departs from a tree lined glen, emerging out onto clifftops, culminating at the tearoom and visitor centre.
