Taunton is Somerset’s largest town and a county centre with a charming collection of historic buildings mingling with a modern shopping centre and a range of shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and markets. A farmers’ market takes place weekly on the High Street and seasonal/continental markets make regular appearances throughout the year. Visit Somerset’s County Museum and Taunton Castle for an excellent introduction to the social and natural history of Somerset before heading out further afield.
Taunton is also a major centre for cricket in England. Taunton’s County Ground is the home of Somerset County Cricket Club and the Somerset Cricket Museum housed in a Grade II listed building sits on the edge of the ground. Cricket isn’t the only major sporting focus in the county town. England’s youngest racecourse is also here. Well worth a visit are the Hestercombe Gardens which feature wonderful wedding and conference facilities set in landscaped gardens. A restaurant and coffee shop, a garden centre and gallery, as well as a play area are all onsite. A great time to visit is during the annual Taunton Flower Show, a popular event that draws huge crowds. The Brewhouse Theatre is the home of multi award-winning Cwmbach Male Choir and offers a year round programme of drama, comedy and musical entertainment.
