Merseyside Attractions

Top attractions in Merseyside are all within easy reach of Liverpool city centre. Two of the most popular include the spectacular Knowsley Safari Park – one of the best safari parks in the UK featuring baboon bus ride and five mile safari drive through. Another firm family favourite is the Catalyst Science Centre in Widnes, a superb interactive science centre and museum with three super galleries focusing in on chemistry. An observatory, alchemy theatre and catalytic discovery lab are all on-site and the science centre is a popular choice for conference events.

Sefton Park & the Palm House

Magical Sefton Park with its Grade II Listed Palm House sits just south east of Liverpool and promises a fun day out for all the family. Spread across 235 acres, Sefton Park is packed with activities and attractions including a large boating lake, lakeside footpaths, cafes, a fairy glen, quirky grotto and ‘old Nick’s caves, and bandstand. Angling is popular in the park and family facilities include a children’s playground with swings, slides and climbing frames.

The Grade II Listed Palm House at Sefton Park is a great Victorian glasshouse first opened in 1896 courtesy of a gift from local Liverpool millionaire Henry Yates Thompson (1838-1928). Heir to a banking fortune and with Liberal politics, Thompson left numerous bursaries to the city. Extensively renovated in recent times, the spectacular Victorian glasshouse at Sefton Park makes for a superb family day out. Around the glasshouse stand statues of Cook, Christopher Columbus and Charles Darwin. The popular Peter Pan statue also features in the park.

Inside the glasshouse has been returned to its original splendour with a stunning array of palms and feature plants from around the world. Exotic favourites include Banana Plants, the only palm native to Europe. General admission is free and The Palm House is available to hire for exhibitions, corporate events, celebrations and parties.

National Wildflower Centre

The National Wildflower Centre in Merseyside sits within the 35 acre Victorian Court Hey Park, just minutes off the M62 motorway and 5 miles from Liverpool city centre. A unique fun family venue, the Wildflower Centre offers an opportunity, for children to discover just how important wildflowers are to our environment.

Historic Court Hey Park, once part of the gardens connected to the Gladstone family, provides the perfect home for this award winning centre. On-site garden attractions include the walled garden which is now home to the demonstration area and wildflower nursery containing around 60 species of plants. Three wildlife ponds and an excellent conference venue are all on-site and events are throughout the year.

Younger tots will love the play area with plenty of space to burn off steam. Indoor activities run in the centre’s craft and exhibition barn and story bags can be borrowed to read during your visit. The centre sells plants and seeds both on-line and via the on-site shop. The Cornflower Cafe offers welcome refreshment, meals and snacks.
