Maryport Tourist Information

The perfect gateway onto the Cumbria Coast, Hadrian’s Wall and into the Northern Lake District, Maryport is surrounded by premier golf links courses and has a lively town centre containing an excellent choice of fine inns. Coastal walking along the beautiful Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and sailing are both popular in the area and a selection of festivals including a Literary Festival run across the summer season. Unsurprisingly in this maritime centre you can expect some fine seafood and best fish and chips in harbourside restaurants, inns and cafes. West Coast Indoor Karting in Maryport has modern go karts to suit all over the age of 8 and premier golf is on offer at Maryport Golf Club located just two miles north of the town. Maryport also hosts a great three day music festival across the last weekend in July annually.

Senhouse Roman Museum Maryport

Located on the Sea Brows at the northern end of Marport, The Senhouse Roman Museum is the main museum hub for Roman collections unearthed in what was an important and rather exposed area for the Romans just south of Hadrian’s Wall. To protect this exposed area they constructed garrisons and mileforts to protect it from potential Scottish invasion and the major site for a garrison was Maryport, around which a settlement grew.

The Roman fort situated next to the museum dates from around the 1st century AD and was later reinforced by the emperor Hadrian. Inside is the impressive collection begun as far back as the 1570s by the Senhouse family and gathered from around the fort and civil settlement . Today it represents one of Britain’s largest collections of Roman military alter stones and inscriptions. Spectacular estuary views can be seen from the top of the observation tower open to the public in the museum grounds! Guided tours, children’s crafts, activities and a packed programme of festivals and events are all year round.

Maryport Maritime Museum

Down on the quayside overlooking the harbour sits the Maryport Maritime Museum housed within the former Queen’s Head Inn once popular as a sailor’s boarding house.
