Dulverton Cottages – the perfect Gateway into Exmoor
Gateway to Exmoor
Dulverton sits close to the Devon border and serves as a southern gateway into Exmoor National Park. It is a popular centre for game sports and outdoor pursuits. Dulverton can trace its history back to the Saxons and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It’s full of character with many historic buildings dotted around the village. A historic trail (leaflet available from the Exmoor National Park Centre) will lead you round pointing out sites of interest. Dulverton has been used as a film location for the "Land Girls" and it is the starting point for the Exmoor Hunt.
Exmoor National Park Authority’s headquarters are based here in Dulverton, and the village centre has a good range of shops, galleries, banks, post office, cafes, restaurants and pubs. The Guildhall Heritage Centre is one of the historic buildings in the centre of the village that houses a range of exhibitions and work from local artists. Being one of the few centres within Exmoor there is a good range of holiday cottage, B&B and guest house accommodation as well as a caravan site on the banks of the River Barle.
Ancient upland oak woodlands surround Dulverton in the Barle Valley. Many of these have been protected as nationally important wildlife sites. These are gorgeous, species-rich woodlands. Many of the species that live and grow here have become rare but are left relatively undisturbed here. The Rivers Barle and Exe flow by the village and there are some beautiful walks direct from the centre of Dulverton up onto the surrounding moorland.
