Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway

The Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway

The Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway

Explore the beautiful woodland rich corner of the North Kent Downs on the charming Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway running from Easter until October from Warren Wood Station near Bredgar village to Stony Shaw Station at Wormshill. With a history stretching back to the early 1970s and privately run by a group of enthusiastic friends, this fully operational two foot narrow gauge railway is located midway between Hollingbourne and Sittingbourne and is much more than just a train ride.

What to See & Do

Both stations on the line have a run round loop, signal box and a station building. Main station is Warren Wood next to the engine shed and workshop with a collection of steam locomotives, freight and carriage stock of different gauges on display alongside numerous railway artefacts. Just in the corner of the engine shed visitors can see a working Victorian Steam Driven Beam Engine in action. The Light Railway also owns many vintage vehicles not powered by steam. There’s something to please all the family here. Browse the onsite Railway Shop and little LGB model railway (watch out for the cave dwelling dragon!), or head off on a pretty woodland walk. You’ll find plenty of space for a picnic whilst watching the trains go by and there is a Tea Room next to Warren Wood Station serving delicious home-made cakes accompanied by street organ music. For those interested in some hands on experience why not join one of the Steam Driving Experience Courses.

Light Railway open days are from Easter to October – visit the website for details on opening times. A large free car park is onsite. First trains usually depart at 11am, and then every 12 minutes up until 4.30pm. Admission price includes unlimited rides on the railway!

Getting Here

From Sittingbourne, take the Bell Road towards Tunstall, then from the Bell Road follow the Woodstock Road. At a crossroads take a right turn onto Tunstall Road, then follow the sharp left hand bend around towards Bredgar village. Continue on through the village, and after around 1 mile from Bredgar you will see Warren Wood Station on the left hand side of the road.

From the M2, exit at junction 5 and follow the A249 to Maidstone. Continue for a short period, then take an unclassified road on the left heading towards Oad Street village – pass through the village, then follow the sharp left hand bend right until you arrive at a T junction. Here take the right turn and continue along this narrow road until you get to Bredgar village pond. Take a right at the pond and you will see Warren Wood just on the left hand side about 1 mile from the village. Visitors arriving via the M20 should exit at Junction 8, and follow signs for Lenham, then at the second roundabout take the left turn towards Hollingbourne. Continue through the village, and after about 3 miles you will see the railway entrance on the right.
