Lower, Central & Upper Gardens

Bournemouth’s seafront gardens are great places to stroll, to catch events and shows, and to simply enjoy the great Bournemouth weather. Including exhibition areas, bandstand, aviary, and lots more, these famous Victorian parks are a fantastic walk from seafront to town, with interesting and imaginatively constructed year-round planting and bedding displays. The Lower Garden’s Pine Walk and terraced rock garden (one of the largest rock gardens in England) are certainly worth a tour. The rock garden itself is Grade 2 listed (as are much of the gardens). The Rock Garden is constructed of Welsh limestone and is home to many exotic species. In the Central Garden, why not try the free Tree Trail – great to encourage children to learn how to recognise trees in a fun setting.

Chine Gardens

Alum Chine is the biggest of the four chines in Bournemouth. Chines are steep river valleys cut into the cliffs. In Bournemouth these have often been planted up with gardens and have shaded paths running through them which can be welcome relief from the summer sun. Alum Chine has tropical gardens originally planted up in the 1920s with evergreen oaks, yuccas and oddities like Australian bottlebrush. The wave-shaped dry stone walls are made from Portland stone – their initial use was as an embankment for the local fishermen. Follow the Tropical Plant Trail and see exotic species from around the world. Alum Chine is off Mountbatten Road in Westbourne and nearby is Argyll Gardens on West Overcliff Drive. Award-winning Boscombe Chine Gardens is situated just south of Christchurch Road. There is also a southern entrance next to Boscombe Pier. Boscombe is very popular with families featuring a games area, children’s play area with water feature, lots of beautiful bedding and planting, a cafe, mini golf, a nature reserve and a mini land train.
