Black Watch Castle and Museum in Perth

Balhousie Castle
The Black Watch Castle and Museum in Perth is one of the most popular attractions in the Perthshire area. It is the Regimental Museum for Scotland’s Black Watch, but also incorporates a café and museum shop. The Black Watch are an elite regiment with an almost 300 year history, including their participation in recent conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Museum is situated in Balhousie Castle on Hay Street in Perth, within easy walking distance of the city centre. Set in beautiful gardens and grounds (dogs are welcome in the gardens only), the Black Watch Museum itself displays many items which will bring the past of the Regiment to life. Using uniforms, reminiscences, films, weapons, military equipment, diaries, photographs, medals and painting, the Museum’s gathering of these regimental items does bring the day to day history of the Black Watch to life.
Your visit to the Museum will begin with the screening of a short film which introduces the visitor to many of the key elements of the Black Watch such as the red hackle, the title, the tartan and the badge. The museum then takes the visitor through seven chronological galleries beginning in the early years of the Black Watch, from 1725-45, all the way up to the post-Second World War period.
Many galleries, including those with links to medals, the royal family and remembrance, can be visited, and rotating exhibitions are usually in place, all of which highlight the lives and achievements of the Black Watch Men.
The Black Watch museum is family friendly and a great venue for a day out.
