Aintree Racecourse – Home of The Grand National
The annual April Grand National at Aintree Racecourse is one of the most famous horse races in the world. The first flat fixture was run at Aintree on 7 July 1829. This special Liverpool racecourse just 6 miles from Liverpool city centre has a rich history, and the Grand National is ingrained in the city’s history and heritage. The very first Aintree Grand National was run in 1839!
An additional five raceday meets run alongside the world famous Grand National each year on Aintree’s two miles of fabulous lush green track including fun family racedays and classic Chase Days. Getting to Aintree Racecourse
Aintree Racecourse sits just to the North of Liverpool city centre, directly along the A59 and easily accessed off the M57 and M58 which link into the M62 and M6. The racecourse is just one mile off the M57 and M58, clearly signposted with AA signs off motorway links taking you directly to Aintree car parks.
Rail links to Aintree Racecourse run from Liverpool Lime Street and Central Stations in the city centre (around every 7 1/2 minutes during the Grand National!) – journey time is only around 15 minutes. Once at Aintree Station which sits just opposite the course, you’re just a 2 minute stroll from the famous racecourse – tickets can be pre-booked with Merseyrail which is recommended for racedays. Regular bus services also run between Aintree and the city centre, and limited on-site parking is available for the Grand National – this can be pre-booked in advance. Merseyrail also offer great value off peak Zone Day tickets.
Liverpool Airport is around a 20 minute drive from the Aintree course, or pick up the fast Airlink bus from the airport to Liverpool South Parkway station for through links to Aintree Station.

Excellent transport links from Liverpool city centre to Aintree on the city’s northern outskirts make Liverpool city centre hotels and apartments ideal for racedays and the Grand National. Alternatively opt for quality chain hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodation easily accessed off the M57 just minutes from the racecourse. Aintree’s northern city location puts it within easy reach of Merseyside’s world class golf coast around Formby and Southport where you’ll find an additional choice of accommodation.
