Abergavenny Castle

Abergavenny Castle

Market town Abergavenny on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is a popular base for walking and activity holidays in the Black Mountains. Offering a traditional Welsh atmosphere with regular markets, the town is just six miles from the Welsh/English border and contains the fascinating Abergavenny Museum on the grounds of the old ruined Norman castle which was totally destroyed in 1233. The surrounding castle grounds are the perfect spot for a summer picnic or stroll, affording spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Abergavenny events include the famous Abergavenny Food Festival, which takes place in September. The town is also home to Beacon Park Boats, offering boats to hire for the day for gentle cruises along the Brecon Canal. Superb local craft centres like Old Forge Crafts as well as traditional specialist shops and farm shops also feature in and around this centre for Welsh local produce. Surrounding Abergavenny are the three iconic hills of Skirrid Fawr, Sugar Loaf and Blorenge offering opportunities for walking and climbing. Gentle riverside and meadow strolls feature around the adjacent Usk Valley which is also popular for fishing.
