Charles Kingsley wrote of The Oxenham Arms in his famous novel Westward Ho .
The Oxenham Arms was the entire setting for the Author Eden Philpotts novel The Beacon . Its name is derived as it was the birthplace of Captain John Oxenham Sir Francis Drakes Ally and 1st Navigator for the English fleet and a renowned Pirate in the mid early 1500 s.
