About West Lodge Holiday Cottage

West Lodge on our beautiful Arbigland Estate near Dumfries is a charming 19th century gate lodge, formerly the estate schoolhouse with a character slate roof, a lovely cottage garden and open plan living space with a woodburner. The cottage is a real gem just 500 metres from Powillimount beach, with some of the best views on the estate across to the Solway Firth, the Lake District mountains and the Isle of Man. Magnificent views of the Colvend Coast, Southerness Lighthouse, the Portling cliffs, farmland and Galloway's Criffel Mountain are also visible from the property.

West Lodge is surrounded by woodland, fields and hedges rich in wildlife - the birdsong around the cottage is a magical symphony. Deceptively small from the outside, inside spacious accommodation is all on one level, ideal for our older guests however narrow doors unfortunately make it unsuitable for wheelchair users. Pets are welcome and the large cottage garden is fenced with two palm trees. A choice of great walks are direct from your door, particularly down to Powillimount beach.  West Lodge is perfect for activity breaks, just a stone's throw from Southerness Golf Course, 7 Stanes mountain bike trails, Colvend Coast sandy beaches and birdwatching at RSPB Mersehead.

Take the A710 Solway Coast road from Dumfries, and turn off the A710 at Kirkbean village, then take a right turn beside the kirk signed to Arbigland and Paul Jones Cottage. Continue along this road, away from the village passing the village hall then up a hill.  Continue on ignoring 3 left turns (the last turn you ignore will be the white painted gates to Arbigland House and the John Paul Jones Museum).

Continue around 2 sharp bends for a quarter of a mile. The turn leading down to West Lodge is on the left hand side just past Moor Cottages on the right.  If you reach Maxwellfield farm you have gone too far. West Lodge is just halfway down the road on the left hand side.
