Smugglers Rock is a Georgian Country House built in 1840 as a coaching inn and is now an eight all en-suite bedroom guest house, renovated to a very high standard. The house still retains a tiny window in its east wall where smugglers would watch out for the constabulary and shine a light for fellow smugglers as a signal to bring up the contraband!
Guests have the use of a spacious open-beamed lounge and an 'olde-worlde' breakfast room, both with wonderful long distance coastal and countryside views. We hold a 4 star rating with the English Tourist Board and have Associate Membership with the AA, you can be sure that you will receive a very warm welcome to our high standard of accommodation.
We offer a choice of seven newly refurbished double, twin and single guest rooms. All have modern en-suite shower rooms with luxury toiletries and all have a TV, hair-dryer and tea/coffee making facilities. Beds are made up with Egyptian cotton sheets and guests enjoy complimentary use of bathrobes.
Two of the rooms have four-poster beds and some have fantastic long distance views across the sea or towards Scarborough and Flamborough Head. For an extra special break, a bottle of champagne can be added as one of our bookable extras.
Free high speed air fibre WiFi internet access is available in the lounge and guest rooms.
We have been awarded the Tourist Board Breakfast Award a have an extensive menu, serving a 'Delicious Yorkshire' breakfast using local produce, including free range eggs, which is oven-cooked in our Aga. We can also provide a lighter breakfast of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or a vegetarian breakfast made with 'Linda McCartney' sausages.
We are pleased to also offer three lovely self catering cottages with are ideal for families of up to four people. Each has its own outdoor space, off road parking for two cars, Wi-Fi and modern kitchens with washing machines and dishwashers. Two well behaved dogs are also welcome per booking. We are ideally located in Ravenscar (at the southern end of Robin Hoods Bay) and we have wonderful walks on the Cleveland Way, an old railway line and several cycle paths on our doorstep. As we are situated halfway between Scarborough and Whitby (10 & 12 miles respectively), we are perfectly located for exploring the area.
Set in 28 acres of farmland in the National Park, Smugglers Rock is blessed with stunning sea and countryside views. On our land we have friendly Shetland ponies, highland cows, chickens, geese and ducks. The B&B is ideally situated to explore the coast and the moors.
Travelling from the south, head towards Scarborough, then follow the A171 towards Whitby. At Cloughton (about 6 miles out of Scarborough) take the right hand turn marked Ravenscar. Keep on this road towards the village for about 5 miles, then up the hill towards Ravenscar you'll spot a disused windmill on the right. Smugglers Rock is opposite on the left. Drive past it, and continue into the car park around the back. The guest house entrance is back towards the front of the house. From the North, head towards Whitby and take the A171 towards Scarborough. About 9 miles out of Whitby on the left hand bend you'll spot the Falcon Inn. Turn left here, then left again and follow the road to the bottom of the hill. Turn left to Ravenscar, and follow above at the disused windmill.
