Northumberland castles offer a great insight into the history of the area. There are more castles in Northumberland than any other county in the UK – largely to keep out the marauding Scots who, historically, had a nasty habit of invading England, leading to many battles in what is now the Northumberland countryside!
If you like Castles Northumberland will appeal to you. Alnwick Castle is just one of the places you’ll want to head to, with its extensive and beautiful gardens and the family appeal created by the use of the castle for the filming of several of the Harry Potter films!
Visiting castles in the area remains one of the most popular things to do in Northumberland. Other impressive castles in Northumberland include Berwick-Upon-Tweed Castle with its adjoining walls which envelop the whole town, and Chipchase Castle in Wark which features striking Jacobean architecture and a 14th Century pele tower.
Durham Attractions
Durham attractions offer a wide range of vastly different ways to spend your day in the city. From swimming to golf Durham has plenty to offer the keen sportsman, while the history buff will be impressed with the culturally significant buildings and landmarks that can be seen on one of the great Durham tours.
Durham swimming pools cater for the seasoned athlete as well as casual swimmers and families. The Abbey Leisure Centre has its own pool, as do many other leisure centres in and around Durham.
