Landguard Fort at Felixstowe

Landguard Fort at Felixstowe

Landguard Fort & The Martello Coastal Path

Landguard Fort at Landguard Point just south of Felixstowe centre is one of Britain's great surviving coastal defensive structures. A fort was first built here at the behest of Henry VIII. Through the centuries Landguard Fort has been a working fort right through to the Cold War in the 20th century. Remodelled and rebuilt on several occasions, the Fort today consists of the surviving red brick walls built in a pentagon form in 1744 complete with 1871 remodelling using yellow London bricks. The interior buildings dating from 1780 have not survived. The Fort was disbanded in 1956 after service as a coastal defensive fort spanning 300 years. Tours including ghost tours are available and the Fort hosts regular re-enactment events.

The conical Martello Towers lining the Felixstowe coast are unique to the East Coast of Britain and fascinating features within our defensive history. Martello Towers feature all the way around England's east coast from Suffolk and Essex to the Kent and Sussex coast. These are precious historic fortresses dating from the Napoleonic period when Britain was at war with France from 1794. The fact that many Martello Towers survive from the period is a testament to their defensive strength.

Felixstowe's Martello Towers trail stretches from Landguard Point north towards Bawdsey and the River Ore estuary. Bawdsey during World War II was also the site of the world's first operational Radar Station with Transmitter Towers. Find out more at the Bawdsey Radar Museum.

Felixstowe Port Viewpoint

The port viewpoint overlooks the Orwell estuary and is incredibly popular with visitor and residents alike. Looking across the estuary you'll see a variety of ships criss-crossing the estuary including some of Britain's largest container ships. Fishing is also popular around the viewpoint and you can pick up foot ferry boat trips across to Harwich.
