Eilean Donan, Kyle of Lochalsh, Highlands

As you approach the Kyle of Lochalsh via the great Glen Sheil you really feel you're in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The mainland gateway to the Isle of Sky, Kyle of Lochalsh is Glen Sheil's main settlement, hugely popular with hill walkers and outdoor activity enthusiasts.

Kyle of Lochalsh was the main ferry point town across to Skye before the famed Skye road bridge was open. Lochalsh is still a very popular Highlands & Islands area, with a railway station, regular bus services across to the Isle of Skye and a choice of boat trips. The town is also the perfect spot from which to explore one of Scotland's most famous castles, Eilean Donan Castle within Loch Duich. Restored in the 20th Century, Eilean Donan Castle was ruined during the Jacobite uprising for harbouring Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Challenging hill walking, and Munro bagging, is on offer around the Five Sisters of Kintail surrounding Kyle of Lochalsh which rise to a height of 3,000 feet. Some of Scotland's most spectacular coastline also features in the area north of Lochalsh, easily explored via The Wester Ross Coastal Trail.

Nestling just south of Lochalsh is the beautiful Glenelg Peninsula where you can pick up boat trips across to the Isle of Skye including one of the few ferry services  to the Island via the Sound of Sleat to Kylerhea. Stay in the heart of the Highlands & Islands. Browse & book Kyle of Lochalsh accommodation online now.
