Duns Castle Nature Reserve

Named after the Gaelic word Dun meaning hill top or fort, Duns is a former county market town in the Scottish Borders overlooked by the Duns Law hill which pushes up to 713 feet. Nestling close to the English Northumberland border, the Duns area has a real traditional old Scottish burgh atmosphere, with Duns centre a scene of historic real ale inns and tearooms around a delightful old market square with Mercat Cross.

Numbered plaques guide you around the heritage town trail, taking in ancient churches, a bronze statue of famous medieval scholar John Duns Scotus and a selection of heritage houses. Motor racing fans won't want to miss a visit to the Jim Clark Museum in Duns, packed with memorabilia and personal items of the twice world champion in the 1960s.

Popular as both a walking and golf base, Duns has an 18 hole golf course surrounded by rolling countryside. The club offers a warm welcome to visitors on a pay and play basis. Nature lovers and walkers will find Duns the perfect holiday base, with local walks including the Duns Castle Nature Reserve and strolls up the Duns Law hill with the remains of the old castle fort at the summit.

You're perfectly placed in Duns hotels, B&Bs and cottages for touring the Border Abbeys, Eyemouth and the Northumberland heritage coast and the Northumberland National Park. Scottish capital Edinburgh is also within easy driving distance. Stay in an idyllic old Scottish burgh - book Duns accommodation online now.
