History & Museum

Sidmouth has a long history as a popular seaside resort stretching back to the Georgian era. The town has over 500 listed buildings and quite a few Blue Plaques, with a mix of elegant Georgian properties and thatched cottages. Regency magic can be seen in buildings like the Royal Glen Hotel which was briefly a childhood home of Princess Victoria. There are many more Strawberry Gothic styled and Cottage Orne buildings dotted about the town.

Explore the history of Sidmouth's Royal visitors and Regency resort heyday at the free entry Sidmouth Museum with examples of Honiton lace and a collection of watercolours of local scenes by artists such as Hubert Cornish. Browse the diary of local resident Peter Orlando Hutchinson, son of a doctor, who came to Sidmouth in 1825 and ended up writing a five volume history of the town. A choice of guided walks are organised from Sidmouth Museum offering a fascinating insight into the formation of the Jurassic Coast.

The beautiful red cliffs of the Sidmouth Coast

The beautiful red cliffs of the Sidmouth Coast

Jurassic Coast

Sidmouth sits at the heart of East Devon's Jurassic Coast, on one of the most beautiful stretches. Rich in geology, the red rocks crowned by yellow upper greensand and white chalk are a breathtaking sight. For a real understanding of just how they were formed visit the Sidmouth Museum and take a free guided walk with expert commentary. The surrounding land surface is ancient, and part of what is called the Great Unconformity, an effect produced from erosion which took place 40 million years ago.

Walking along the South West Coast Path around Sidmouth is incredibly popular all year round. From the magnificent red cliffs at Sidmouth head east along the coast towards Seaton to appreciate the spectacular and dramatic changes in rock formation along this World Heritage Coastline. Gradually the great red earth and cliffs of the Triassic Period change to white chalk around Beer village, before arriving at the mouth of the Axe and deep red cliffs at Seaton village.
