Tucked away just to the east of St Mawes on Cornwall’s south coast, the Roseland Heritage Coast is one of England’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. Dotted with secluded sandy bays and sublime creeks, the Roseland Peninsula offers a leisurely, quieter pace and is a haven for walkers, wildlife lovers and watersports enthusiasts. The peninsula is a peaceful scenic base yet is only a short drive from top locations and attractions including Cornish capital Truro home to National Museums and the Eden Project.

Scenic boat trips include the regular Place ferry linking St Mawes harbour village to Place Creek on Roseland (dogs are welcome onboard!). Many visitors bring along their own boats or kayaks, or alternatively hire them from a choice of Roseland boat hire companies.

Beaches & Walking

Roseland beaches include hidden cove beaches and white sandy beach bays perfect for family days out and for couples looking for that romantic and peaceful beach spot to relax. Top Roseland beach choices include the sunny south facing Pendower Beach owned by the National Trust which adjoins Carne Beach at low tide. Little and Great Molunan are sheltered cove beach gems overlooked by the striking St Anthony Lighthouse and headland, whilst Porthcurnick Beach is a stunning south east facing sandy cove beach again owned by the National Trust and popular for watersports. The beaches of Roseland retain consistent excellent water quality year after year.

If you’re a lover of cliff top or waterfront walks and leisurely strolls through secluded valleys then the Roseland Peninsula is just for you. Pick up maps and guides at the Roseland Visitor Centre in St Mawes.

Henry VIII’s Castles

The exposed coastline around Roseland and St Mawes faced potential French and Spanish invasions in the Tudor period so Henry VIII constructed his famous conical defensive castles in the area. St Mawes Castle is amongst the Tudor king’s best preserved forts built between 1539 to 1545. Another is Pendennis on the other side of the Fal estuary – both together protected the deep waters of the Carrick Roads.
