The unique Pillowery Park Bed and Breakfast in Higher Clovelly, North Devon was designed and built by owner Chris West who now runs this 4 Star standard B&B with his wife Sylvia. We tell you their story and the inspiration behind their grand design.
Meet your hosts Chris and Sylvia. Their talents are extensive. Chris not only designed his unique Bed & Breakfast, he also built it. Chris and Sylvia are familiar faces in the local community. Both are active members of local churches and involved in many village organisations. Sylvia is an advisor with the Women's Institute and Chris is Parish Council Chairman and a member of the Parish Hall Committee. Both are gardeners and walkers with a wealth of local knowledge on best local walking and cycling trails including the South West Coast Path and the Tarka Trail from Bideford, routes they regularly tread. These hosts go that extra mile – if you’re a keen pianist Chris can even arrange for you to play the Victorian tracker organ at the local church!
Before turning his hand to building and design, he was a chef and you'll appreciate his culinary skills when you tuck into your Full English Breakfast and fabulous home-made jam and bread. Chris preferred working in the open air, so instead turned his hand to building.
The house impresses as soon as you walk through the front door with its vaulted ceiling, roof windows and eco-friendly features including Solar PV providing electricity and powering the hot water system! The design is a true one off, with a range of modern technologies such as high insulation levels and cosy underfloor heating.
