Warkworth Castle

Warkworth Castle

A heritage coast jewel, Warkworth and neighbouring fishing village Amble are ideal locations from which to explore the Northumberland Heritage Coast. Centrepiece attraction in the town, and dominating the skyline is the spectacular 14th Century Warkworth Castle, one of Britain's best preserved medieval castles, thought to be another stronghold of the mighty Northumberland Percy family. The castle is open for tours and features a rare cross-shaped keep with its roof intact and a vast Great Hall.

Visit Warkworth's other medieval gem -  the Warkworth Hermitage,  a 14th Century chapel situated alongside the River Coquet, within easy walking distance of the castle via a pretty riverside walk. Themed walking trails including St Oswald's Way long-distance footpath are easily accessed from the town and nearby fishing village Amble is where to pick up boat trips to Coquet Island, an RSPB off shore reserve rich in wildlife including puffins and numerous seabirds.  Nestling on the northern edge of Druridge Bay, Amble is also a favourite location on the Heritage Coast for water sports, including surfing, sailing and windsurfing.
