The trail begins at The Cat Gallery shop, 45 Low Petergate – ranked a number 1 shopping attraction in York on TripAdvisor. It then pops round the corner onto Stonegate for Cat number 2, then back and on to High Petergate with views of York Minster, down Duncombe Place towards the Yorkshire Museum gardens. There’s a mini quiz too – ideal for younger ‘kittens’. Hand your completed quiz to The Cat Gallery shop at the end of the trail and kids will receive a cat themed reward! Private guided tours of The York Cat Trail for groups are also available offering more detail on each of the cats and the history of the city.

History of Cats in York

There’s a history of cats in York dating back to 1920 when one Sir Stephen Aitcheson had the idea of placing two cat sculptures on a building he owned on Low Ousegate. In the late 1970s local architect and professional black cat drawer Tom Adams had the inspiring idea of putting black cats on buildings he designed in York city centre. The sculptor Jonathan Newdick was duly commissioned – lookout for Jonathan’s beautiful black cat sculptures on York’s Cat Trail!
