Hadrian's Wall, Corbridge

The perfect gateway onto Hadrian's Wall, Corbridge also makes a great base for exploring both Newcastle and the Northumberland National Park. There are two sides to Corbridge - today's modern town and half a mile to the north west of modern day Corbridge, the site of the original Roman Corbridge - a town the Romans called Corstopitum. In the Roman period Corbridge was a mighty stronghold along Hadrian's Wall, and a meeting point of Roman roads including the famous Dere Stret running south towards London.

Find out more about Corbridge's fascinating Roman heritage at the Corbridge Museum positioned alongside the excavated remains of the Roman town where structures unearthed include granaries, parts of the old Stangate  Road, barracks and various headquarters buildings. The old Roman remains of Corstopitum are one of the great sites along the World Heritage Hadrian's Wall, with further forts including Chesters Roman Cavalry Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort and the Vindolanda Roman Site are all within easy reach.

Back in today's modern Corbridge, you'll find a good selection of character accommodation, traditional inns and independent shops.
