Canterbury's landmark theatre The Marlowe

Landmark independent theatres The Marlowe and the Gulbenkian in Canterbury offer an opportunity to catch some of the country’s best touring shows and new drama. The Marlowe Theatre

The Marlowe Theatre just off the High Street in Canterbury city centre is one of Britain’s landmark theatre. The Main Auditorium was recently extended and now has a capacity of 1200. See best touring productions and shows here in the Main Auditorium with excellent acoustics and no seat more than 25 metres away from the stage. The building is across three floors with spacious bars, a café, terrace and full access to all throughout. The Marlowe is also home to new addition The Marlowe Studio, a more intimate venue hosting creative performance, workshops and gigs.

Shows are an eclectic mix of best children’s theatre, musicals including popular revivals of all time classic musicals, comedy and cabaret nights and a sprinkling of radical theatre performed by some of the country’s best touring companies. Gulbenkian

The Gulbenkian is Canterbury’s other premier theatre venue located within the University of Kent campus, easily reached on foot or two wheels via the Crab & Winkle Way and Eliot footpath from the city centre. Alternatively pick up regular bus links from the centre or Westgate. Canterbury West station is the nearest station to the venue.

With an emphasis on promoting new talent and innovative performance which inspires, the Gulbenkian hosts an outstanding programme of new theatre, dance, music, comedy and family shows. The venue is also Canterbury’s hub for independent and world cinema with 290 seats available. Hits from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe often feature here and the Gulbenkian Café, popular with students and visitors alike, is onsite.
