Looking over the Weald

Bath's incredible museums, glorious architecture and fabulous shops may mean that you think Bath isn't for the fans of the great outdoors - but that's certainly not the case.

Outside of the city there are a great number of wayposted country walks to choose from, as well as farm and activity days with children - for example at Longleat. So, choose a bright day and explore Bath's surrounding countryside. Or why not hire a bicycle and see the city from a two-wheeled perspective? Some great bike hire firms include Bath Bike Hire who operate from Sydney Wharf. You can cycle along towpaths or further afield as they even allow overnight hire. Or why not hire a narrowboat and build up your watercraft skills? Details on both can be found here:

Of course, the small city centre and huge number of attractions nestled with Bath mean that a walk round the city is always a joy, but for countryside walks, you could do worse than try the Cotswold Way. This National Trail is around 100 miles long and incorporates the Cotswold Escarpment, villages and ancient sites. Bath is the Southerly starting point for this walk.

But why not get the best of all worlds, combining both the city and country, and take a trek on the Bath Skyline Walk? A six mile walk with marked paths, you can stroll through the beauty of beech woods and look towards the Blackdown Hills, and clamber to Little Solsbury Hill's Iron Age fort, all the while taking in the spectacular cityscape of Bath. Maintained by the National Trust, the paths allow the walker to view both natural and man-made surroundings at their best.

Or try the Two Tunnels - this walking/cycling path has taken a disused railway line and turned it into a wonderful route. The special feature is the Combe Downe tunnel - a mile long tunnel with sound and lights - an interactive experience taking the indoors outdoors!

Something a bit different

For something a little unusual, why not take to the water? Take a boat trip round the city, hire a punt, canoe or rowing boat from the Bath Boating Station, or hire a narrowboat.

That's one option of course, but perhaps you're looking for more> The adventure seekers amongst us will love StagWeb. Based in bath's centre, this company organises trips for stag parties in the areas surrounding Bath, and includes some incredible activities from hovercrafting to clay shooting, paintball and bubble football. They even have a Somerset Challenge to attempt!

And, for the heartily active amongst us, there's also Mendip Outdoor Pursuits to consider. Only around 40 minutes drive from the city centre and offering team building, archery, snow-, land-, rock- and water-sports, this diverse activity centre will tire you out and invigorate you ready for another day of city sight seeing!
