Chic shops in Salburn with vintage frontage

An enchanting Victorian seaside resort close to the Yorkshire Border and North York Moors, beautiful Saltburn features vintage seaside architecture galore from a classic Victorian cliff lift and pier to a magnificent Victorian station. Saltburn was a popular spa town resort during the Victorian era, funded and founded by the big railway entrepreneur Henry Pease of the The Stockton & Darlington Railway.

It's a rich history and you could say that Saltburn was one of the first seaside resorts to boom as a result of the early passenger carrying railway routes! The town centre is brimming with independent craft shops, character guest houses and plenty of fine restaurants and seaside cafes. Stay in one of Britain's most beautiful Victorian seaside resorts and experience one of the best collections of vintage seaside architecture in one resort.

Victorian Pier, Cliff Lift & History

Britain's oldest water-balanced cliff lift dating from 1884 is here in Saltburn along with a heritage miniature railway (a classic 15 inch gauge railway) dating from 1947. Find it at the bottom of Saltburn Bank near Lower Promenade. At the base of the Cliff Lift sits the Victorian Pier constructed in 1869. Many of the resort's vintage seaside features survive adding to its charm including the Italian Gardens laid out in 1860.

The Old Saltburn hamlet below Cat Nab and Huntcliff pre-dates the building of the Victorian seaside resort. The Old Saltburn area has an 18th century smuggling heritage like many of the small villages situated along the Cleveland Coast. The Ship Inn in Old Saltburn on the Huntcliff side of Skelton Beck facing the beach dates from the late 1500s and retains many of its original timbers. Enjoy some fine homemade pub food and fine ales in here.

Surfing, Beaches & Attractions

The Saltburn coast, like the Cleveland Heritage Coast, has the distinctive stunning cliffs and beach bays. Surfing in Saltburn is incredibly popular around the Seaside Award Winning sand and shingle beach either side of the Pier. The BSA Accredited Saltburn Surf School is where to head for surfing lessons, located on Lower Promenade. You can also hire surfboards, wetsuits and other surfing equipment from them.
