Weymouth Main Beach & Esplanade

Weymouth Main Beach & Esplanade

Main Beach

Weymouth's Main Beach Bay with its three miles of beautiful sands is award-winning and popular with families, located adjacent to the town centre and harbour. The endless sands are ideal for a range of fun attractions and beach sports including beach volleyball and motocross, fun rides, donkey rides and trampolines. Framed by Georgian buildings lining the esplanade, the Main Beach has excellent facilities, and you'll find many of the resort's top attractions along the seafront including the Pavilion theatre, the pier and the Sea Life Tower. Dogs are only permitted in restricted areas of Main Beach during peak summer (May to September). Look out for the occasional grey seal or bottlenose dolphin off-shore!

Beaches Around Weymouth

To the west, east and south of Weymouth's Main Beach sit more peaceful beach coves and shingle beaches, many of which like Bowleaze Cove and Preston in the east welcome dogs all year round. Central beaches around the Main Beach include the quieter sand and shingle Greenhill Beach stretching from the Pier Bandstand towards Lodmoor Country Park. Push further east and discover unspoilt beach bays flanked by Jurassic Coast cliffs like the National Trust's Ringstead Bay which has stunning views across to Portland. A beautiful shingle beach bay accessible from the cliff top path, Ringstead was once used by smugglers and today is a favourite spot for bathing, kite flying, picnics and walking from Weymouth to White Nothe along a stretch of the South West Coast Path known as Smugglers' Path.

Osmington Bay, Preston and Bowleaze Cove all to the east of Weymouth centre are gateways to the heritage coast and more peaceful, with easy access onto cliff top paths. Dogs are welcome along this stretch of the Weymouth coast and you'll find some wonderful accommodation options in this area from coastal smugglers' cottages and seaside bungalows to cliff top Art Deco hotels and all inclusive family holiday parks.

Traditional Beach Attractions

Weymouth's Punch and Judy shows by Poulton's Puppets are amongst the last remaining on the beaches of the UK. Regular shows run through the Summer months, from the end of May till early September, with show times generally at 12 and 2pm. Most of the puppets, signs and other related items are lovingly made and hand-crafted by the puppeteers themselves. Weymouth's award-winning beach donkey rides have been entertaining visitors since the late 1800s. Find them around the Pavilion end of Main Beach near The Boat Cafe. Donkey rides are available across the summer season (March to October), during seasonal holidays like Christmas and, weather permitting, during most winter weekends through the year.
