Poldark Country - the spectacular mining retains of the West Cornwall Coast

The Poldark Story

The Poldark story, derived from the novels by Winston Graham who lived in Cornwall for 30 years, is a romance with a dark edge. Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to an 18th century Cornwall oppressed by wealthy land-owners. His mine has been seized and his betrothed he learns is to marry his cousin. It’s a classic tale of lost love, feuds and class conflict set in the landscapes of Cornwall’s North Atlantic coast and the far west.

Cornwall’s Poldark Country

The Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro marked the centenary of author of the Poldark novels – Winston Graham - in 2008 with a hugely popular exhibition and announced the launch of the Winston Graham Prize for unpublished historical fiction. The twelve Poldark novels were also republished that same year. The story continues to enthral audiences and the new series is expected to continue the trend. The original 1970s series showcased numerous spectacular landscapes, churches, houses and beaches in Cornwall including Porthcurno Beach west of Penzance and Saint Enodoc Church near Polzeath on the North Coast.

Visit The Perranzabuloe Folk Museum in Perranporth – Winston Graham’s local museum which he was a patron of for many years. Inside is a memorial exhibition to the author and a memorial seat overlooking Perranporth beach sits nearby. The seat is located in an area called ‘flat rocks’ which is close to the site of a chalet where Graham wrote.

Cornwall’s tin mining heritage is a key theme in the novels and there’s no better place to find out more about the working conditions of 18th and early 19th century tin mining (the period in which the Poldark story is set) than at Poldark Mine with underground mine tour situated near Helston in West Cornwall.
