Mutoid Waste Vehicle at Arts By the Sea

Bournemouth's a magnet of a town for festival goers. Just take a look at some of the family friendly, arts, music and great festivals held here:

Arts by the Sea & Festival of Words

This vibrant festival of music, installations, spoken word, films and much more, adds life to the already buzzing town with contributions from local talent and international artists. Running from the end of October for a couple of weeks, it is a cultural experience you don’t want to miss. Celebrating South East Dorset’s spoken and written words, this May festival includes readings, workshops and other events. Another date for your festival diary is The Visual Effects and Animation festival designed to promote the industry and the perfect event for cinema fans.

Food & Drink Festival

Running for ten days at the end of June, there are exotic food markets to browse, foodie events galore including in the Festival Demo Kitchen, plenty to buy and live music too. The event usually includes a street food festival with face painting, world events of all kinds, and obviously lots of inspiring smells and tastes to experience.

Family Festival

Recently revived, the family festival is one of Bournemouth's historic festivals originally running from 1905 to 1914. This event featured a children’s day with maypole dancing, fancy dress and competitions. To commemorate the centenary of World War I in 2014, the family festival is up and running again centred around Meyrick Park, full of stalls and family fun, just as it was more than 100 years ago. The family festival takes place annually in July.

Festival of Learning

The Festival of Learning at Bournemouth University features 150 free public events ranging from archaeology, lectures and tours to workshops and talks. Sessions range from examining how contamination spreads in your kitchen, building the perfect sandcastle, social media for the terrified to how to get a great night's sleep! Find out more on the Festival's website.

Christmas Festival

At its heart Bournemouth’s Christmas Festival has a German-inspired Christmas market throughout the town. Bright lights and decorations give all of Bournemouth a fantastic festive atmosphere and market stalls sell plenty of German food and drink. Browse seasonal market stalls selling a range of gifts. Santa is always in residence at his grotto and there is also a Nativity Parade and a variety of entertainment and live music in the main square.
