Night time in Stromness

Visitors to the Orkneys who believe there's no nightlife to be found would be wrong. Although the Orkneys' nightlife will never be mistaken for that of, say, Glasgow or Ibiza, there's certainly plenty going on!

Clubs and bars

The main Kirkwall nightspot is Fusion - a nightclub which caters for most musical tastes from chart to retro. Their website by-line is "Two Floors, Two Bars, Two DJs". With local DJs, live gigs and a smart-casual dress code, its downstairs area is open on Saturdays , and the smaller upstairs area is intimate and popular. Or you might like to try out the sleek, moodily lit Torvhaug - a downstairs bar and club with upstairs DJs, live music and more. Very close to the Wireless Museum, this lively bar has a great choice of wines and beers, coffees and free wi-fi .

Food, drink and more...

Helgi's in Kirkwall is cosy, contemporary and comfortable with quotes from the Orkneyinga Saga on the walls, well-priced meals and views of the harbour. Its website's quite right when it claims "Helgi's design takes inspiration from Orkney's Viking past". Not only is this a fine pub with really interesting menu of daily specials, they also host plenty of events such as Movie Week and a Pub Quiz.

Other places worth considering if you're after a really enjoyable evening in traditional surroundings (perhaps holding on to a locally brewed beer), include The Ferry Inn in Stromness, which hosts events from all genres and has fabulous seafood on offer.

Or try the Auld Motor Hoose which is oddly packed with large screen tellies and memorabilia, yet still managed to be somewhat intimate and friendly - and host to music events. Most startlingly (the clue is in its name), the bar has a full size sports car on it! Treat yourself to a couple of bottles of locally brewed beer, for example Dark Island, Red MacGregor or Clootie Dumpling - all produced by Orkney Brewery, but don't come here if you're looking for quietly traditional pub life. For that, try the Albert Hotel and restaurant in Kirkwall which is cosy, offers home-cooked local produce and is relaxing both at day and night.

Kirkwall is home to quite a number of venues where performances and shows are held - theatre, halls, hotels and bars etc. The Pickaquoy Centre is the local leisure arts, conference and social centre and also home to the Phoenix Cinema - the only Digital 3D cinema in the Orkneys.

And the nightlife involved when one of the Orkney's annual festivals is in full swing, is worth seeing!
