Cardiff bay at night

Cardiff Bay is a stunning regeneration project, built within and around the Cardiff Bay Barrage (a massive engineering project closing off Cardiff Bay between Penarth Head and Queen Alexandra Dock).

And the barrage's existence really has regenerated the area, bringing in many facilities and tourists, despite initial opposition from environmentalists who feared the inevitable loss of habitats for birds and other wildlife.

What's Cardiff Bay like?

Two rivers supply the Bay - the Taff and the Ely - which is now essentially a massive freshwater lake in the city's old docklands area. It doesn't sound promising, but it is!

Things to see

The Wales Millennium Centre (The Welsh National Opera's home base , shopping outlets, the Sennedd (National Assembly for Wales), the Roald Dahl Plass (a venue for festivals and carnivals), and many water sports facilities have all taken their home in Cardiff Bay, as have many people in this docklands area with its high prestige apartments and hotels. Also, interestingly, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre is sited here too and this old, rescued wooden church is now a venue for concerts (it was even attended by Roald Dahl).

Other things to see here include Techniquest (a family focussed science discovery centre with theatre and planetarium), many venues with their continuous stream of events, a sports village and even an ice rink. Or try the Red Dragon Centre with its leisure and entertainment complex...

And when you're tired and weary, visit Mermaid Quay for its refreshing cafes, restaurants and shops.

Artwork

Take a look at the bronze mermaid situated at Penarth, and the public art '3 Ellipses for 3 Locks' which painted three yellow ellipses onto objects and which only works ( like the best graphic pavement art), if viewed from one angle.

Water based

There are tons of things to do that are water connected - white water sports, activities at the sailing centre, yacht or rowing clubs, a trip on a public transport water bus, the restored Helwick Lightvessel, a visit to the Cardiff International Pool, or even perhaps a visit to the Cardiff Bay Wetland Reserve (which includes a viewing platform from which to spot wild birds). There's so much to see here at Cardiff Bay.

How to get there

Cardiff Bay, to the South West of the city centre is reachable via A roads, a railway station and good bus services, so there's no excuse not to visit! Only a short distance from the M4, this area will appeal to the cosmopolitan in us all.
