Rogano's Art Deco setting

A cosmopolitan city, Glasgow has a huge array of places to eat out and to socialise over a drink or two, from cheap and cheerful to Michelin starred.

Quality at a good price

If you're after diverse and creative burgers at a decent price, tasty and down to earth, then look no further than Burger Meats Bun on West Regent Street. Or, for a deli-cafe, try Cherry & Heather on North Gower Street. Cheap but with delicious upmarket and fusion foods, their vegetarian options are also very good. Or for a gorgeously brilliant bar and sandwich shop specialising in innovative menu items, try Piece on Argyle Street.

The Hanoi Bike Shop

Ethnic

For quality ethnic food without a hefty price tag you definitely should take a trip to The Banana Leaf on Old Dumbarton Road. It is an unassuming cafe but is really friendly and specialises in South Indian cuisine and the prices are extremely reasonable. Or try Khublai Khan's on Candleriggs for a Mongolian Barbecue feast that's as exotic as you want to make it - there's tons of choice and a friendly atmosphere. The Hanoi Bike Shop is a brilliantly named Vietnamese restaurant with everything made from scratch - even their tofu, which is real commitment!

Vegetarian

The vegetarian options in Glasgow are good and, unlike in many places, a vegetarian won't merely be offered a cheese omelette or ploughman's lunch as many of the non-meat dining choices are actually vegan. And the choice is superb. The 78 Cafe Bar on Kelvinhaugh Street is brimming over with Bohemian, 1970s style. The prices are fantastic, the vegan food incredible and the whole atmosphere is endearing and wonderful. Or try Mono, at Kings Court for vegan food in a setting that's also a record shop and library, amongst other things! The Flying Duck on Renfield Street (close to the Pavilion Theatre) is also completely vegan and offers games (board and electronic) in a creative atmosphere.

Michelin starred

Chardon d'Or, with Brian Maule is located in a Georgian town house on West Regent Street. The decor, of carved ceilings, pillars and classy contemporary decor, gives way to the stunning food. Chardon d'Or also offers private dining suites and a champagne bar. Or try the Urban brasserie on St Vincent Place in the heart of the city - a sophisticated eating place with friendly table service. Rogano, established on Exchange Place since the 1940s, has a superb art deco interior and a reputation for exquisite sea food. Or try La Parmigiana on Great Western Road, Kelvinbridge, for classic decor, classic dishes and lovingly produced Italian cuisine.
