Talybont Reservoir as the sun sets

Talybont-on-Usk (Powys), is a small village in the centre of the Brecon Beacons between Llangors Lake and Talybont Reservoir. Close to Brecon, Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny, Talybont's name reveals its position on the River Usk, but it is awash with waterways as the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal also flows through.

What's Talybon-on-Usk like?

According to its website, Talybon-on-Usk has a "bit of everything" - from rivers, waterfalls and reservoir to woods, hills and wildlife, and as proof, it even won the Powys Village of the Year competition in 2003. The village's Eco Travel Network encourages visitors to hire low energy cars like the Renault Twizy - powered by green electricity (locally generated from sun, wind and rain). Talybon is also handy for such nearby towns as Brecon - with military museum, cathedral and town museum.

Dark night sky

Astronomers might be interested to know that Talybont-on-Usk has some of the darkest skies in the UK, with the Milky Way visible to the bare eye, and the Aurora Borealis over the Brecon Beacons is a sight to behold. Five of the best spots are seen here:

Active holidays

Keenly active visitors to this area will want to walk, but may also try biking and canoeing, fishing, and birdwatching as there are good habitats for wildlife and birdlife, ranging from mountains to streams. Plenty of facilities and organised events will entice visitors in. For instance, fell running is popular and an annual race is held, plus bikes and canoes can be hired locally (canoeing is allowed on the Usk when its closed fishing season). Visitors can fish in the River Usk - good for trout and salmon. And the Brecon Beacons in general are recommended for coarse and game fishing, while the canal provides chub, dace, roach and perch.

Talybont-on-Usk is also a great base for a cycling holiday - the 'Taff Trail' gives good scenic family cycling; and the walking is superb - from the canal towpath and the disused railway line, to the route to the waterfall at Blaen y Glen, reservoir routes, or routes up the Beacons.

Annual events

Brecon Jazz Fringe Festival is held in the Summer, as are the Green Man Festival and the nearby Brecon County Show. And Hay-on-Wye (about forty minutes away) now holds a Springtime bike festival!

Prehistory

There's evidence of pre-Roman settlements here, and many local hilltops show evidence of Iron or Bronze age mounds and burial sites etc.
