Dan-yr-Ogof Dinosaur Park and Caves

Sennybridge, in Maescar, Powys, is at the North of the Brecon Beacons National Park around 30 miles from Swansea and not far from Brecon and Llandovery - all three are close to the A40 trunk road. The village's name in Welsh - Port Senni - indicates it is close to a bridge over the Senni river - it is positioned at the Senni's inflow into the Usk.

What's Sennybridge like?

Parts of the stunning scenery surrounding Sennybridge is used by the Ministry of Defence as a 29,000-acre Infantry Warfare training area, and there's even a German Village that's been constructed to assist. It is an active training site, therefore not a visitor attraction! But Sennybridge isn't all about the military. This is a largely agricultural area with rolling hills, forests and mountains, giving the visitor ample opportunities for horse riding, biking, walking, wildlife spotting and bird watching. The varied terrain is of particular interest to mountain bikers.

Sennybridge Show

Sennybridge is still a thriving agricultural market town, with an active livestock market. The agricultural show is held annually in late Summer and includes trade stands, horses, livestock, craft stalls, horticulture and other domestic exhibits, and even a dog show.

Historic ruins

The thirteenth Sennybridge Castle (also known as Castell Rhyd-y-Briw), is a ruin with only a little of a round tower and some South wall fragments remaining. Nearby Castell Du is a fourteenth century keep.

Life underground - and other days out

There are a number of fascinating days out to be had at the caves at Port-yr-Ogof and Dan-yr-Ogof. The latter's showcaves were discovered in 1912 and visitors can also stroll around an iron age village and stone circles, and visit a centre for shire horses - or dinosaur park!

There's also dry ski slopes, houses and gardens to visit, as well as waterfalls and scenic walks at Ystradfellte. The Craig-y-nos Country Park visitors centre offers local information about social and industrial history, the geology of the Cribarth mountain, and of course everything else you'd expect from a country park.

How to get to Sennybridge

Just a straight trip South along the A470 will link you with the M4 (a 45 minute journey). With local bus connections to the station at Llandovery, with Swansea, Shrewsbury and Cardiff, Sennybridge is accessible, even to the airports at Swansea and Cardiff.
