St Lythans Burial Chamber

Cowbridge is an upmarket town just West of Cardiff in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. With great links to Bridgend, Cardiff and the M4, this chic market town will appeal to many who adore the good life.

What’s Cowbridge Like?

Often described as South Wales' "Bond Street", Cowbridge offers its visitors an unexpectedly diverse range of shopping and dining experiences. It is fashionable yet rural - a wonderful combination especially appealing to those who love to shop and buy good quality, unique goods, then settle down to relax at quality restaurants.

Food festival

Cowbridge holds a very popular food festival each October. Now encompassing an entire weekend, the town attracts over 15,000 visitors during the festival which includes stalls, demos, talks and entertainment, and is fascinating for foodies and non-foodies alike.

Cowbridge's historical past

Cowbridge's Roman history was unearthed in 1977 when remains of shops and houses were found under Cooper's Lane. In its first town charter (1254) it was called Longa Villa (Long Town), which is appropriate given its long, slim shape.

There's no castle here (though the ruined Old Beaupre manor house is nearby and St Quentins castle at Llanblethian is half a mile away and protectively overlooks the town), but interestingly, (and uniquely in this old Glamorgan area) Cowbridge does have town walls dating from the early fourteenth century - some parts still standing, especially near the South Gate.

For those interested in prehistory, local burial chambers, older than Stonehenge, can be visited at Tinkinswood and St Lythans.

Gardens - The Cowbridge Physic Garden and Dyffryn House

Just off Cowbridge's High Street, the free-to-visit small and peaceful Physic Garden seeks to educate visitors in the art of plant use for medicinal and culinary purposes. Nearby Dyffryn House, a wonderful Victorian mansion with some gorgeous stained glass, overlooks its gardens which still retain their Edwardian design. Or for more hands-on garden experiences, why not visit the fruit garden at Hendrewennol for pick-your-own, or the vineyard at Hensol for tastings and tours.

Family fun

There's plenty of family entertainment at the Warren Mill farm park, with its large coarse fishing lake and plenty of unusual farm animals. Or why not visit Taskforce Paintball at its 30 acre woodland site, or other nearby centres for riding and trekking, karting, canoeing, biking, roller skiing and much more?

How to get to Cowbridge

Cowbridge, positioned just between Cardiff and Bridgend on the A48, is not far from the South Wales coast. Access to the UK's main motorway network is via the M4 just a few miles North. Cowbridge doesn't have a railway station, but Llantwit Major, on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast is the nearest, just over five miles away.
