Cullompton in East Devon sits close to the Somerset border, easily accessed off the M5, Junction 28 and surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside including the Blackdown Hills AONB to the east. Exeter and the International Airport are within easy driving distance to the south. The town is known as the gateway to Devon and contains independent shops, fine inns, restaurants and cafes offering traditional customer service and the finest local produce. Like many of Devon's inland villages and market towns, Cullompton has an ancient history - tun in Saxon means settlement or enclosure.

The rural parish covers around 8000 acres and around the town centre you'll find two Grade 1 Listed buildings - St Andrew's Church and The Walronds, a Tudor/Jacobean mansion beautifully restored by the local community. Over 90 Grade II Listed buildings are also around the town, best admired via the Heritage Trail. Markets have been held here in Cullompton since the 13th century, and today's street market located in the Higher Bull Ring together with a classic independent Pannier Market in the town hall are held every Wednesday. Cullompton also hosts a monthly Farmers' Market on the second Saturday of every month. The town makes the perfect base for visits to nearby family favourite attraction - Diggerland with rides, play areas, sandpits, lots of space for children to run around and an onsite Goodie Store.

Where to stay

Whether you're looking for that perfect rural base on the Devon and Somerset border or a travel stopover just off the M5, the choice of Cullompton accommodation caters for all tastes. Stay in an award-winning Georgian country estate around the town or opt for one of the many beautiful cottages and converted barns in the area. There are a selection of welcoming inns with B&B rooms available, ideal for exploring the nearby Blackdown Hills and the Devon and Somerset market towns.
