Spectacular countryside around Callington

Callington in South East Cornwall sits on the Cornish/ Devon border midway between Bodmin and Dartmoor. The town has a rich history dating back to its origins as a Saxon settlement and is a popular location for walking and cycling breaks. Serving as a great base from which to explore Bodmin Moor, the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor, Callington offers a pretty rural setting in the heart of Cornwall and Devon World Heritage Mining territory. Today it's a pretty scene of 15th century churches, old inns, an informative heritage centre and a wide choice of cafes, restaurants and inns serving food. Explore the Callington Mural Trail around the town with paintings of past and present life in the area. St Mellion International Resort with its prestigious Jack Nicklaus Signature and Kernow golf courses set within 450 acres of beautiful Cornish countryside is also nearby.

Mining Heritage & Kit Hill Country Park

Callington's boom period was the 19th century when it became a major centre for tin mining. Find out more in the great little free entry Heritage Centre featuring around 15,000 archive items. Of particular interest are the thousands of photographs taken in the 1880s by Edwardian photographer R Gimblett. Examples of china from some of the many chapels in the area are also on display. Heritage mining remains and many scenic walks are around Callington. Kit Hill Country Park on the northern edge of the town is a famous historic mining site, also home to the highest point in the Tamar Valley, with around 400 acres of beautiful heathland affording glorious views towards Bodmin and Dartmoor. Kit Hill was a site for granite quarrying and mining in the past - the remains of some old engine houses are still visible. It's also a great spot for walking, birdwatching and wildlife. Pre-historic burial sites have also been unearthed on the slopes of Kit Hill.
