Benbecula, a small Outer Hebrides island, is situated between South and North Uist (and connected to both by causeways).
Benbecula is known as the island of fords and its name also means Mountains of the Ford. Fords and causeways are certainly features of this beautiful island.
The main village, Balivanich is in the North West of the island, near to the airport. Interestingly, since 2006 the landowners of Benbecula have been the islanders themselves.
Benbecula offers great facilities for walking, cycling, water and loch sports including fishing, a sculpture trail and much more, including a golf course situated next to the island’s air strip which offers the golfer brilliant views.
Historic buildings on the island include the ruined 14th century Birve Castle. The village of Balivanich once was home to a monastery, and you can also visit the now-ruined Columba’s Church to its South. Benbecula isn’t a place full of dazzling bright lights and manic visitor attractions but it is a great place from which to spot wildlife, enjoy the great outdoors and relax through your holiday time - truly getting away from it all. So it is oddly incongruous that the island does have an interesting military history, including the testing of missiles. In 1958 an army base was created on the island and the Second World War Hebridean control centre has now been reconfigured into the local airport.
Benbecula airport, on the island's North coast, runs daily scheduled flights to Stornaway, Barra and Glasgow for those visitors who prefer to fly. It also offers car hire facilities. For those who prefer to travel to the island by sea, the Oban to South Uist ferry runs a five hour trip, though other combinations of sea and road travel are available throughout alternative island routes.
