Wickerman burning

The Wickerman Festival is held each Summer at East Kirkcarswell near Dundrennan, in South West Scotland - just about an hour's drive from the M74. Tickets generally go on sale early in the year for each Summer's event - both online and at ticket venues throughout Scotland. Major acts have played here over the years, as well as smaller solo performers and bands.

The festival site is stunning and the event is certainly worth a visit as it remains one of the largest independent festivals in the UK. Obviously, central to the Wickerman festival is the 40ft wickerman figure, towering above all, and set alight amidst cheering at the festival's finale each year.

Encompassing everything we've grown to expect from a modern day festival – music stage, family atmosphere, fair rides, juggling, cinema, yurts, biking and arts and crafts - the main focus is obviously the music. And this family-friendly event is friendly to all, encouraging a cheerful, positive atmosphere. The website wishes visitors to "make much merriment... dress like a spiv... and bring a mate".

Where to stay if you prefer not to camp

Many visitors to the festival will take advantage of the camping facilities, and the ticket prices do include camping, but this is not to everyone's taste – many people are unable to camp or prefer to stay in comfortable, cosy accommodation in the local area.

And yes, it is wonderful to travel into the festival, refreshed and rested, each day. We offer many types of accommodation in the Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright areas. From hotels to self catering cottages, this beautiful, tourist-friendly part of Scotland will be a joy to visit. Why not incorporate your festival weekend into a longer break in Dumfries and Galloway, or use it as a starting point for a longer break in Scotland?
