One of Britain's great medieval cities, Norwich contains around 1,500 historic buildings located within its city walls! Historic landmarks span the Norman, Medieval, Georgian, Victorian and contemporary period in the city. The magnificent Norwich Cathedral dates from the Norman period and is one of Europe's most complete Romanesque buildings. Other architectural highlights include the Georgian Assembly Rooms, the Norman Norwich Castle Keep, the medieval merchant's trading hall Dragon Hall and late 1930s Art Deco gem Norwich City Hall.

Modern Millennium building, The Forum, sits in the heart of the city centre and is the hub for tours and tourist information. At almost every turn Norwich reveals an architectural gem. The city is home to over 30 flint-built medieval churches and a selection of beautiful historic shopping arcades and department stores including the breathtaking Art Nouveau Royal Arcade and independent department Store Jarrold, a two time winner of UK Independent Department Store of the Year.

The Sainsbury Centre

An inspirational public art museum, The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is just a short bus ride from Norwich city centre. The Sainsbury Centre, designed by Norman Foster is set in parkland within the University of East Anglia grounds and contains internationally acclaimed collections of Abstract and Constructivist Art and Art Nouveau jewellery, furniture and glassware. The Sainsbury Centre is particularly famous for its collection of chairs by European and American 20th century designers. Amonst the collection is an early work by Picasso and Egyptian and Greek sculpture dating back 3000 to 4000 years.

Theatre & Festivals

A superb choice of theatres are here in Norwich including the great Theatre Royal, the Norwich Playhouse, Maddermarket Theatre and the Puppet Theatre. Norwich Arts Centre offers a mixed programme of drama, comedy, family activities and shows, plus music concerts across various genres and exhibitions. See everything from classic pantomime to big musical shows and opera at the Theatre Royal. The unique riverside Norwich Playhouse is an old Georgian maltings and offers classic Shakespeare, Burlesque revues, musicals and stand-up shows. Historic buildings including the Dragon Hall and The Assembly House host regular music concerts and performances.

Norwich is a real festival city with an annual literature festival, Fringe festival and music festivals like the Sundown Festival. The Norfolk Showground located just west of the city centre hosts numerous events and festivals from firework spectaculars to craft and food shows, antiques and collectors fairs and the big June Royal Norfolk Show.
