Donkey rides on Weymouth Beach

Donkey rides on Weymouth Beach

Weymouth's three mile long sandy beach is mere minutes from the town centre and harbour, and offers a great traditional family seaside holiday experience. Views of the Jurassic Coast from the beach bay are spectacular and the beach itself is packed with fun family things to do from traditional donkey rides and Punch & Judy shows to gentle funfair style rides, deckchair hire, free Summer entertainment and watersports equipment hire. The Pavilion Theatre offering a mix of year round comedy shows, musicals, ballet, a Christmas pantomime and more sits at the southern end of The Esplanade. One of the best ways to explore the Jurassic Coast around Weymouth is via a choice of boat trips from Weymouth Harbour.

Beach volleyball is particularly popular in Weymouth. The town has its own local league and regular competitions and volleyball events take place on the sands of Main Beach. Weymouth and nearby Portland Harbour are top spots for watersports activities including sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, water skiing and fishing. The Isle of Portland also offers excellent cliffs suitable for rock climbing and abseiling.

Family Attractions

Weymouth is an excellent Summer family holiday destination and the fine sandy beach that runs in an arc alongside the Esplanade is as family-friendly as it comes. You'll find plenty of traditional entertainment in the form of donkey rides and Punch and Judy shows as well as fun activities like trampolines, crazy golf and pedaloes to keep the family occupied. You can also hire deckchairs or sunbeds along the beach. Weymouth is famous for its sand models that are made from the fine sand, some of which are coloured up and feature famous cartoon characters and animals. You can view them from The Esplanade. The beach hosts a range of events throughout the year including volleyball competitions, firework displays, motocross and kite festivals. Dogs are permitted on the Pavilion end of the beach only between May to September and Weymouth Beach is accessible to wheelchair users with ramp/ level access. Beachside refreshment kiosks, adjacent parking, showers and toilets (including disabled toilets) are all available in the Main Beach area.

Seafront Land Train

Pick up the miniature Weymouth Land Train running along the seafront Esplanade from Lodmoor Country Park and the Sea Life Centre to the Sea Life Tower with flights up 53m to the top for stunning views of Weymouth Bay and the Jurassic Coast.

Sea Life Park & Lodmoor Country Park

The seafront Lodmoor Country Park is a 350 acre site with an RSPB Reserve containing open water, reedbed, saltmarsh and wet grassland that is excellent for a range of birds including rarities like Cetti's warbler, bearded tits and bittern, as well as hundreds of swallows, martins and waders. In addition to the country park there are several family attractions here including the Weymouth Sea Life Park, Pirate Adventure mini-golf, a miniature railway and a skatepark. The Sea Life Park is a marine sanctuary home to seahorses, starfish, seals, otters and penguins. Younger visitors will adore Adventure Island and the Splash Lagoon with its water slide, splash pool and waterjets!

Watersports & Activities

Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour to the South of Weymouth - the deepest man-made harbour in the country - are great for all sorts of watersports. Sailing is hugely popular as are kitesurfing, windsurfing, water skiing and diving. Weymouth Bay has specifically designated areas for watersports so bathers can splash around in the sea without being disturbed. If you haven't had a go at watersports before you'll find plenty of places where you can organise tuition or trips as well as pick up equipment or accessories. A popular guided trip is by kayak or power boat along the Jurassic Coast. Shore angling and sea fishing are both popular around Weymouth. You can bring your own boats to launch at several places or pick up one of the many sea fishing trips available from Weymouth Bay. Shore fishing is popular particularly at the lagoons behind Chesil Beach.
