Most of Newquay beaches have a lifeguard service across the summer season and a coloured flag system is used as an indicator of beach safety:- Red and Yellow flags mark an area patrolled by lifeguards and tell you that this marked area is safe to swim, bodyboard or use inflatables in. Black and White chequered flags highlight a zone on the beach used by lifeguards for surfboards, kayaks or watercraft - no swimming is permitted in this zone. A red flag on the beach is the indicator for danger. Visitors should never enter the water whilst the red flag is up. Finally, an orange windsock indicates that there are offshore wind conditions and in these conditions you should never use an inflatable.
