Yelverton on the south western edge of Dartmoor is a charming old spa village surrounded by magnificent moorland scenery. The village not only affords easy access into the National Park, but also to Plymouth (around 25 minutes away), to South Devon and the beautiful South Hams coastline and the adjacent Tamar Valley AONB. Nearby Sheeps Tor offers excellent walking opportunities. This south west corner of Dartmoor ('War Horse' Country) around Sheepstor and Meavy village was the site for early scenes of the film 'War Horse'. The historic market town of Tavistock with its famous Pannier Market is just to north, and just west sits Buckland Abbey, Garden and Estate (National Trust).
Fine local inns and restaurants can be found around Yelverton village centre as well some some wonderfully welcoming historic and contemporary B&Bs. Around the village you'll find a plentiful choice of country cottages and some stunning luxury country house hotels. Yelverton is a great base for walking and cycling breaks. The village sits directly adjacent to The Drake's Trail, a 21 mile long walking and cycling route which connects Plymouth to Tavistock. Other attractions and activities in the area include The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum (around 8 minutes from Yelverton) with beautiful terraced walled garden around an old medieval vicarage. Premier golf is on offer at Yelverton Golf Club with its spectacular 18 hole moorland course, wonderful views across Dartmoor and the occasional Dartmoor pony on the fairway!
The 21 mile long Drake's Trail (open to walkers and cyclists) is part of the National Cycle Network Route 27 (Devon Coast-to-Coast) which pushes through very attractive scenery along the western edge of Dartmoor. Some awesome cycling climbs, ascents and trails can be found on the edge of Dartmoor here. The Tour of Britain cycling event and other sports events regularly take place in the area. There are several points in Yelverton and Tavistock where you can hire bikes including the Leg O Mutton Cycle Hire @ The Cornershop in Yelverton.
Burrator Reservoir around 10 minutes east of Yelverton is popular with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and for fishing. The reservoir is surrounded by mixed woodland which contrasts spectacularly with the rugged moorland backdrop of Sheeps Tor. A circular, fairly easy flat walk skirts around the reservoir - the walk takes around 1 hour, 30 minutes to 2 hours. Car parks are at Quarry car park, the Dam and Norsworthy. You can pick up fishing permits at Yelverton garage for rainbow and brown trout fishing on the reservoir. Riding stables offering scenic rides into Dartmoor can also be found around Mary Tavy and Yelverton.
