Cycling along the old railway line from Princetown to King's Tor

Surrounded by high moorland, Princetown is a popular Dartmoor walking and outdoor activity holiday base in the heart of the National Park. The area also contains some stunning Grade Listed B&Bs and historic country house hotels serving as the perfect relaxing retreat surrounded by spectacular moorland scenery. Challenging hillwalking and gentle walks branch out from the High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown passing Hart Tor, Black Tor Waterfall, Ingra Tor Quarry and Bronze Age settlements. Follow the old railway line running for five miles from Princetown to King's Tor, an impressive rock outcrop on Dartmoor.

The High Moorland link walking and cycling trail runs for 26 miles through the the centre of Dartmoor via Princetown, linking up with the circular Dartmoor Way running around the outskirts of the National Park. In the village centre there are charming craft centres like Princetown Smithy and a selection of great independent cafes and historic inns like the friendly Plume of Feathers serving fine food and locally brewed ales from Dartmoor Brewery based in Princetown. A little brewery shop is onsite where you can purchase Dartmoor's finest including Jail Ale and Legend Ale.

Princetown is home to one of The National Park Visitor Centres where you can pick up a wealth of Dartmoor maps, guides and information on local activities and attractions. Entrance to the visitor centre is free and an exhibition area is inside. The fascinating Dartmoor Prison Museum in Princetown attracts thousands of visitors annually and features exhibits offering an in-depth insight into 200 years of prison life. Breathtaking moorland walks to the north and the south are easily accessed - Princetown's central National Park location makes it a great gateway base ideal for accessing all the Park's attractions, and the most spectacular Tors and walks in the north and south. Bustling market town Tavistock is also within easy reach just to the west.
