The medieval packhorse bridge across the River Erme at Ivybridge

Market town Ivybridge on the southern edge of Dartmoor is a gateway into the National Park and South Devon. A historic mill town and staging post, Ivybridge is surrounded by spectacular mooland and cut through by the River Erme, the original source of power for former mills in the town including a Paper Mill on Harford Road. Ivybridge takes its name from an old medieval packhorse bridge - the Ivy Bridge - located at the northern end of the centre and painted by many artists including JMW Turner. A heritage trail around the town takes in the packhorse bridge and other sites of historic interest.

The Two Moors Way, a major north-south long distance walking trail across Devon, runs from Ivybridge in the south to Lynmouth on the Exmoor coast in the north. Visitors based in and around the town also have easy access to walks south along the Erme Valley Trail. Ivybridge has a reputation for stylish independent shopping around its compact, attractive centre. The shopping hub is Fore Street, the Glanvilles Mill precinct area and Erme Court where you'll find a variety of specialist shops and weekly markets. A striking modern complex - The Watermark - is also in this area housing a cinema, coffee shop, bar, room hire space and a 'Gateway to The Moors' visitor centre.

Walking & Attractions

Ivybridge has various leisure attractions including a large leisure centre with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym and squash courts. South Devon Tennis Centre is also located here offering four indoor carpet courts and four all weather floodlit tennis courts - visitors are warmly welcomed. Affording easy access into South Devon and Dartmoor, Ivybridge sits close to attractions in both areas including Dartmoor Zoo near Plympton and Pennywell Farm near Buckfastleigh. Plymouth attractions are an easy drive away as is the pretty village of Dartington near Totnes.

Beautiful South Dartmoor is right on your doorstep. You can find out more about historic mining remains and Neolithic sites in the moorland around Ivybridge at the town's Watermark Visitor Centre. Walking along the Two Moors Way and the Erme Valley Trail to nearby Ermington 3 miles away are easily accessed, and there are lots of gentle walks around the town including a 1 hour stroll from the Ivy Bridge to Longtimber Woods. Or explore the 24 acre woodland gardens of Lukesland with a brook situated just a short drive from Ivybridge.
